Barnes Man and Van is committed to providing a safe and healthy working environment for our employees, contractors, customers and members of the public who may be affected by our domestic and commercial removal activities. This policy sets out our approach to managing health and safety across all moving, loading, transportation and delivery operations.
We recognise that professional removals involve manual handling, vehicle use, work in and around homes, offices and other premises, and the movement of goods that may be heavy, fragile or awkward. We therefore place safety at the centre of our planning, training and day-to-day decision making.
Policy aims and objectives
The aims of this Health and Safety Policy are to prevent injury and ill health, protect property, and promote a culture of safety awareness in every aspect of our removals service. We will identify and manage risks connected with packing, lifting, carrying, loading and unloading vehicles, driving, working at height where applicable, and operating in shared or public spaces.
Our objectives are to:
Identify and assess risks associated with removal and transportation tasks.
Implement suitable control measures to reduce risks to an acceptable level.
Provide clear instructions, information and training to staff and contractors.
Maintain safe equipment and vehicles that are appropriate to the work carried out.

Management responsibilities
The management of Barnes Man and Van is ultimately responsible for health and safety performance. Management will:
Lead by example and promote a positive safety culture throughout the business.
Ensure that adequate resources are allocated for health and safety arrangements, including training, equipment, maintenance and supervision.
Carry out and regularly review risk assessments for all key activities, including home moves, office moves, storage handling, packing, loading, transport and unloading.
Develop and maintain safe systems of work, including standard operating procedures for manual handling, stair work, use of lifting aids and vehicle loading.
Ensure that all staff are competent to perform their roles and understand their health and safety responsibilities.
Monitor compliance with this policy and take corrective action where standards are not met.
Employee responsibilities
Every employee has an important role in maintaining a safe working environment. All team members must:
Take reasonable care of their own health and safety and that of others who may be affected by their actions during removal operations.
Follow the training, instructions and safe working procedures provided by Barnes Man and Van.
Use correctly any equipment, vehicles, tools and personal protective equipment supplied by the company.
Report accidents, injuries, unsafe conditions, damaged equipment and near misses to management without delay.
Cooperate with management in the implementation of health and safety measures and attend required training sessions.
Refrain from engaging in horseplay, dangerous behaviour or any action that could put themselves, colleagues, customers or the public at risk.
Safe working practices for removals
Safe working methods are essential across all aspects of our moving services. We will:
Plan each move in advance, taking into account access routes, stairs, lifts, parking, loading restrictions and any special handling requirements.
Use correct manual handling techniques, encouraging team lifting for heavy or awkward items and avoiding unnecessary lifting where possible.
Make use of appropriate lifting aids and moving equipment, such as sack trucks, dollies, straps and furniture blankets, to protect both staff and goods.
Load and secure items safely inside vehicles to prevent movement during transit and ensure even weight distribution.
Control work areas to reduce the risk of slips, trips and falls, keeping routes clear of packaging, tools and debris.
Take particular care when working in shared areas such as communal hallways, car parks and pavements, ensuring that members of the public can move safely around our operations.
Manage fragile, sharp or hazardous items with additional care in line with risk assessments and safe systems of work.
Vehicle and driver safety
Our vehicles and drivers are central to the safe delivery of our services. Barnes Man and Van will:
Ensure that all drivers are competent, hold the appropriate licences and are familiar with the vehicles they operate.
Maintain vehicles in safe working order through regular checks, servicing and inspection.
Require drivers to carry out daily vehicle safety checks and report any defects immediately.
Promote safe driving practices, including adherence to speed limits, journey planning and adequate rest.
Ensure that loading and unloading are carried out in a safe location, with attention to traffic, pedestrians and lighting conditions.
Training, information and supervision
Barnes Man and Van is committed to providing appropriate health and safety training and supervision. We will:
Provide induction training to all new staff covering our health and safety standards and expectations.
Deliver specific training on manual handling, correct lifting techniques, use of equipment, vehicle loading and safe driving, as required for each role.
Update training periodically to reflect changes in procedures, equipment and legal responsibilities.

Accidents, incidents and emergency procedures
All accidents, incidents and near misses will be taken seriously and used as an opportunity for learning and improvement. We will:

Take necessary action to prevent a recurrence, including revising risk assessments or procedures where appropriate.
